This page is a place to list foreign language articles on the English Wikipedia, to see if they can be translated before they are listed on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. If someone speaks the language the article is written in and can state that it is not worth translating, the item should be moved to AfD or tagged with {{prod}}.

TRANSLATION DEPARTMENT

RELATED PROJECTS

[edit] Standard procedures

If the article is a mere copy of (all or part of) an article in a foreign-language Wikipedia, it can just be tagged with {{db-foreign}} to get added to Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion: we want to discourage people who cut articles from one Wikipedia and paste to another without translating. If the intent is to ask for a translation of an article from a foreign-language Wikipedia, the correct place to do that is Wikipedia:Translation. As an alternative, you can leave a message on the contributing users talk-page using the templates from Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English/Templates for user talk pages or using {{UE}}.

Sometimes, legitimate articles are replaced by foreign-language content. In this case, the last English-language version should be restored from the history.

If an article has been listed here for two weeks and is still untranslated, it should be moved to AfD. When moving items to AfD, the boilerplate text on the article should be changed from {{notenglish}} to {{subst:afd}} and the other deletion steps should be carried out.

When listing a page here, you might want to find the Wikipedia:Embassy or Ambassador member of the Wikipedia that relates to the language the article is in and invite them to move the page to their own Wikipedia. If you don't even know what language the article is in you could use Language recognition chart and if that fails, some language recognition web site, such as xrce, or languid.cantbedone.org to find out. Please leave a note on this page if you do this to prevent duplication of messages. If you have come here from another Wikipedia, please note on this page what you think should be done with the article.

Please check for copyvio before listing here. (Articles which meet the criteria for CSD G12 can be speedily deleted with {{db-copyvio}}, others copyvios should be listed on WP:CP.) If you can tell what language an article is written in, that might help. Also consider posting the first line or so.

When pages listed here have been translated, their entry can be removed (or moved to cleanup if the translation needs another pair of eyes).

[edit] Boilerplate text

For a page that needs translation in its entirety (so it would be appropriate to delete if not fixed):

1. Use the notice {{Notenglish|NameOfLanguage}} if you know the language used, or {{Notenglish}} if you cannot identify the language of the page in question. The template will show up as:
2. Add a mention on this page, using:
{{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=NameOfLanguage| Comments= }}--~~~~ replacing NameOfLanguage with the English name of the language if you know which language was used, or {{subst:Needtrans| pg= | Language=unknown| Comments= }}--~~~~ if you cannot identify the language used
3. You may also choose to warn the contributing editor with {{Uw-english}}, the "use English" warning, or suggest to use a different language Wikipedia with {{contrib-xx1}}, where xx is the language code (available templates). An alternate template for identifying the article as having been listed here is {{uw-notenglish}}. Usage is {{subst:uw-notenglish|articlename|datein2weeksfromlisting}}~~~~.

If there is just a section that needs translation, that notice is inappropriate, so it's a little trickier:

1. Use [[Category:Wikipedia articles needing translation]].
2. Add an appropriate note at the top of the page in question, e.g.:
''Section [[#f5f1ff-of-section|name-of-section]] contains text that needs translation into English.''.
3. Add a mention on this page.

If the article has been translated, but needs attention from someone approaching dual fluency in both languages:

1. Use the notice {{cleanup-translation}}, which will show up as:
2. Add a mention to the translation cleanup section on this page.

  • This is a geo stub. It mentions the distances to nearby towns and the bus routes you need to get to it. Translate, unless it already exists on English Wikipedia under a different spelling. --Cbdorsett (talk) 07:59, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
We don't seem to have a Malayalam translator at hand. Admiral Norton (talk) 19:08, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
I linked it to the Malayam Wiki, just in case someone the know turns up to translate and expand it. De728631 (talk) 15:43, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
The two week period is up, so it can be prodded. It seems unlikely that it will be translated soon. nneonneo talk 17:58, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Amar Ujala

The language of this article is Hindi. Only the last two lines of the article are in Hindi. Thanks! Samuel Tan 09:58, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Apparently it has been translated. I don't see Hindi anywhere on the page. Admiral Norton (talk) 12:58, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
It was removed in this diff, with what appears to be a misleading edit summary. I'm not sure if the Hindi text is really that relevant, though. nneonneo talk 15:41, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

  • Catalan. --Blanchardb-MeMyEarsMyMouth-timed 18:06, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Weird. This text should be moved to the Catalan Wikipedia. There is a stub there with the same name and same topic, but this text is new. Cbdorsett (talk) 20:26, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
moved text to Catalan stub.  Andreas  (T) 22:19, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
So should this article be deleted? Cricketgirl (talk) 11:34, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Ideally, all the Catalan text would be translated for an article in English WP. It is a municipal district so there is unlikely to be any problem with notability or POV. Itsmejudith (talk) 11:46, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
  • No, leave it please. I'll translate it in the next few days, when I get some time. Cbdorsett (talk) 12:12, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Vidal Medina

The language of this article is Spanish. Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 20:23, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Could he be that guy: Jorge Medina Vidal? De728631 (talk) 22:13, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Answer to self: probably not, judging from the dates and Tamaulipas in Mexico. The article Vidal Medina is an exact copy though of a brandnew entry on the Spanish Wiki. De728631 (talk) 22:20, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
  • I tagged it for speedy delete A2. Cbdorsett (talk) 04:01, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
    • The article has been subsequently modified and partially translated, so A2 no longer applies. --Blanchardb-MeMyEarsMyMouth-timed 23:44, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sistemang pang-ekonomiya

The language of this article is unknown. Snydale (talk) 11:55, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

  • It's Tagalog. The article looks a bit like original research - it's a listing of different economic systems. Cbdorsett (talk) 13:14, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Consider transwikiing to the Tagalog Wikipedia, but don't bother to translate it into English. Just looking at the words which have obvious English translations (feudalism, mercantilism, socialism, etc.) it seems that we already have an article Economic system which corresponds to this. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 14:38, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] เกาะช้าง

The language of this article is unknown. --Seascic T/C 04:34, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

After doing some research over here and on the Thai Wiki, I'd say there is already an article: Ko Chang. De728631 (talk) 16:09, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Okay to redirect? --Blanchardb-MeMyEarsMyMouth-timed 02:12, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Someone who speaks Thai should have a look the article before we really redirect it, I was just crosschecking the title on the Thai Wiki and found the url at the bottom linked to a Ko Chang ad website. But at least the Thai Wiki seems not to have anything similar. De728631 (talk) 09:15, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Well, the same characters (as the title) are used in the Ko Chang article: "Ko Chang (Thai: เกาะช้าง), also Koh Chang...". It is undoubtedly about Ko Chang; the only remaining question is whether there's any useful information worth translating. However, I should also note that searching for relatively long phrases yields Google results, principally for http://thaiholynamecom.blogspot.com/ and http://www.koh-changinfo.com/th/howto.asp, which suggests copyvio. nneonneo talk 16:57, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
www.koh-changinfo.com appears in the article as well (probably meant as a source). So it could very well be a copyvio. I'd say prod it. De728631 (talk) 18:37, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
I've just gone ahead and redirected it, as I'm fairly convinced that the text is copyvio after comparing it with Google search results. nneonneo talk 22:08, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Cristofer Duarte

The initial language of this article is Spanish. – Zedla (talk) 03:01, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

  • The article was tagged for speedy delete, but the tag was removed by another editor. The article makes a sort of a claim for notability, something along the lines of "became famous throughout Argentina." The article is about a 13-year-old Hip Hop singer, contributed by a new user who claims to be 15. The article is partly written and the contributor will probably continue working on it. It seems to be well written, but I think someone should independently check whether the subject of the article is mentioned anywhere else on the Web. If not, the article should be nominated for deletion under the five-day process. If the subject is in fact notable, the article should definitely be translated. Cbdorsett (talk) 04:54, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
If he was in fact notable, I suppose he would already have an entry on the Spanish Wiki. Also, a thorough name search on Google did not reveal a single entry that linked Cristofer Duarte and Hip-Hop other than this new article over here. De728631 (talk) 09:10, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
  • Translated. There is enough of a notability assertion to avoid A7, but it is not backed up in any way by a Google search, so I prodded it as well. --Blanchardb-MeMyEarsMyMouth-timed 10:53, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
  • This is apparently not the same musician as the Chris Duarte from Austin, Texas, who has released a few albums. I don't think this one is notable enough for Wikipedia. His own website has nothing more than a half dozen pictures, and none of them even show his face clearly. The article was written by a close friend who thinks he's great, and that's great. When he's notable, we should have an article, but not before then. Cbdorsett (talk) 05:06, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Arcaya

The language of this article is Spanish. nneonneo talk 17:16, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

I roughly translated the article. Kubek15 (Sign!) (Contribs) (UBX) 21:38, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Does anyone know the Wikipedia policy on genealogy pages? This article is about three generations of the Arcaya family, and it contains little other than lists of children and short descriptions of the various families. Maybe some of the individual members of this family might qualify as notable, such as Álvaro Enrique Arzú Irigoyen who was president of Guatemala from 1996 to 2000. My personal opinion is that pages of this sort are not encyclopedic and should be excluded. Cbdorsett (talk) 05:02, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
In short: Names and Genealogy are not suitable for articles. Surnames maybe. See:Wikipedia:Deletion policy/names and surnames. So I'd say that the first (3?) paragraphs, a ver few others further down (heraldry, general references to world dispersion), and maybe a 'see also' in disambig style, may be worthy. - Nabla (talk) 19:07, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
This may be (at least in part) about a Basque medieval "clan", I need to check that because in that case I think it might be notable. Either way, we can keep the page because there's a town by that name (Arcaya/Arkaia) which has no page yet. It might make more sense to turn it into a geo stub and keep some of the genealogoy stuff under a section of "historic families" or "famous ppl from..." or something like that. [edit] Qiu Fazu

The language of this article is Chinese. Kubek15 (Sign!) (Contribs) (UBX) 10:37, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

I translated the first bit. it's about a surgeon and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Other pages link to him so probably notable (eg Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji University). Akerbeltz (talk) 16:59, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
There is also zh:裘法祖, the translation should preferably be from there. Andreas  (T) 02:23, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Le Quang Nhac

The initial language of this article was Vietnamese. Parts of this article are okay, but one paragraph appears to include Vietnamese names translated syllable by syllable into English, which doesn't look proper. The last paragraph is entirely in Vietnamese. Metropolitan90 (talk) 05:08, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

I left a note at the Vietnam wikiproject. Some of it seems to be machine translated. Itsmejudith (talk) 21:31, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Foot Kang ann

The initial language of this article was Chinese. I suspect this is a machine translation of the corresponding article on the Chinese Wikipedia. I'm requesting a translation since my Chinese isn't good enough to do the translation... -Samuel Tan 09:30, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

It's not a machine translation of zh:福康安. I'm not even completely convinced it's a machine translation, judging from the author's userpage which is written in a similar style to the first revision. I've asked the author for the original material under the assumption that it was translated. I would think, though, that a proper translation from zhwiki would be more appropriate, since the text, as it currently stands, is quite broken.
As a note: the author's other contributions may also require cleanup. nneonneo talk 15:46, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
Completely translated and cleaned up thanks to User:Cunningswine, User:219.78.160.198 and User:219.78.169.185. nneonneo talk 18:29, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

  • Hmmmm - I have a problem deciding what to do with this one. It's already been translated to English, so at the very least, it should be moved to the bottom of this page. It's a bio that reads like a resume, but the guy looks fairly notable to me. Any thoughts? Cbdorsett (talk) 12:15, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Joana Raposo

Not sure what language it is, or what it's about. Green caterpillar (talk) 22:43, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

It was Portuguese, and was translated by the author. Now it just needs cleanup post-translation. nneonneo talk 01:44, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
  • I tagged it for speedy deletion as being a non-notable musician. The original article on the Portuguese Wikipedia is going to be deleted very soon on the grounds that it is personal propaganda. The vote now stands at 8 to 0 in favor of deletion. It should be deleted here too. Cbdorsett (talk) 14:08, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
    • If the deletion succeeds at the Portuguese Wikipedia, then we can prod it here for that reason, provided it is just a translation of the Portuguese text and nothing more. nneonneo talk 16:21, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
    • Vote is now at 11-0. Also, another reason for deletion is that the person is not important/notable, which, judging from our translated article, seems to be the case. nneonneo talk 16:23, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Aïn Smara

This new article is a cut and paste from "the complet encyclopedia" (sic) at [1] so it should be deleted as a copyright violation. It seems to be about a city in Algeria, although that is not stated, and using the language search tool listed above suggested the non-English words might be Indonesian. It is partly in English and partly in some other language It identifies many aspects of the city, but using non-English terms for what is being presented, such as that its "wilaya" is constantine, or its "daïra" is khroub, leaving the English language reader no wiser than before he read it. It has other problems, like opinion as to who are the "best runners" or that "the roads on ain smara are bad" but if it is a city with a population of 35000 as claimed, it should have an article. Just not this poorly written copyvio one. Edison (talk) 15:12, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

The French Wiki has an index of municipalities in the wilayah of the Constantine province, Algeria, which lists Ain Smara. Unfortunately there is no article on that city over there. De728631 (talk) 15:32, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
